Passivhaus in the foothills of Caerphilly
The main block provides 34 apartments for the over 55s, a mix of 1- and 2-beds. The project has been part funded by a grant from the Welsh Government through their Innovative Housing Programme IHP : on completion, this will be the largest Passivhaus development so far in Wales, and as such will lead the way in demonstrating how to scale up Passivhaus for the masses. On this project, innovation and an eye on the future is being balanced with tradition. The basic construction, however, relies on traditional build methods that the contractors are already familiar and comfortable with: brick and block with a parge coat and full fill mineral wool cavity insulation.
The team at Linc Cymru anticipates that as Part L is revised, and the baseline requirements for levels of insulation, airtightness and indoor air quality start to rise – in turn necessitating the inclusion of MVHR as well as higher quality delivery across a project – the cost differential between a Passivhaus and a building regs project will shrink.

The castle was constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to maintain control of Glamorgan , and saw extensive fighting between Gilbert, his descendants, and the native Welsh rulers. Gilbert began work on the castle in following his occupation of the north of Glamorgan, with the majority of the construction occurring over the next three years at a considerable cost. The project was opposed by Gilbert’s Welsh rival Llywelyn ap Gruffudd , leading to the site being burnt in and taken over by royal officials in Despite these interruptions, Gilbert successfully completed the castle and took control of the region.
The core of Caerphilly Castle, including the castle’s luxurious accommodation, was built on what became a central island, surrounding by several artificial lakes, a design Gilbert probably derived from that at Kenilworth.

In a bid to crush the black economy and raise tax revenues, India’s government abolished money or at least certain circulating notes. The result? A disaster, says Simon Wilson. India’s cash-dependent economy is struggling to cope with the shock of a well-intentioned but poorly executed effort to tackle corruption, tax evasion and the vast black economy.
On 8 November Prime Minister Narendra Modi suddenly announced, live on television, that as of midnight that night, the country’s two highest-denomination notes, the rupee and 1,rupee notes, would no longer be legal tender. However, the notes would not turn into worthless pieces of paper at the stroke of midnight. Indians had a grace period of until 30 December to deposit them in bank accounts or convert them into redesigned R or brand-new R2, notes. But they also announced strict limits on the exchange of physical bills into new notes, and people depositing the old notes had to produce identification.
The Dying to Work Campaign
The rate at which we produce and consume levels is suffocating the planet. Traces of it can be found in the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the water we drink, in oceans, rivers and lakes, and even in the air that we breathe. These worrying statistics motivated one community to tackle single-use plastic in their area. Plastic Free Caerphilly, a group comprised of local businesses and concerned residents, supported by Caerphilly Friends of the Earth, was born from a public meeting to discuss what could be done to reduce plastic waste in the town of Caerphilly.
Within three months a Facebook group was created, followed by a second meeting featuring regional experts who share their insight and experience of running plastic campaigns in their local communities. During that meeting the group decided to ramp up their ambitions, and aim to affect enough change in the community to merit a “Surfers against Sewage” SAS plastic free award.

Morgan Jones Park, sunny, dry afternoon. The other is Canton Libs, a tempting fixture but the Athletic Stadium venue doesn’t inspire. In the end I decide on a quick return to Dynamo Aber – I enjoyed my visit there in the last round and this time there’s the incentive of a programme. Added to which it’s a simple, quick bus journey over the mountain.
For me, all of those are considerations at different times – but until today I’ve never chosen a game because it’s close to a hospital! But my wife’s hospitalisation at Llandough on Friday put all football matters on hold for me. Will there be an upset? Who doesn’t normally issue programmes but will in accordance with cup rules? Well, at the time of the draw, I had a plan to go to the Wrexham area for Llay Welfare’s tie, but that plan has been abandoned for two reasons: firstly, I cannot be away from home for the whole day and need a more local option; and secondly, Llay switched their tie to Penmaenmawr anyway!
